FIELD GUIDE

Why club context wins hockey pools

Fantasy hockey is played one player at a time, but every one of those players lives inside a club: a coach who decides his line and his power-play unit, a goalie tandem that decides how many starts there are to share, and a schedule that decides how many games he plays in your matchup week. The managers who win their pools usually evaluate that context first and the player second. This page is the map: 32 clubs, two conferences, four divisions, each club's record beside its name, and a hub behind every row with the roster, the schedule and the headlines.

Two conferences of sixteen. The East holds the Atlantic and the Metropolitan, the West the Central and the Pacific, eight clubs in each division, and every club plays 84 games over a season that runs from late September to April.

A record is a question, not an answer

A club's record tells you it wins. It does not tell you how, and how is what matters for fantasy. A club that wins tight games behind a hot goalie produces one fantasy asset and starves its skaters; a club losing 5-4 every other night is a gift to anyone who owns its first line. Use the record here as the start of that question, and the standings for the points, the games in hand and the pace.

Games per week is the club property that decides matchups

Every skater on a club plays the same number of games in a week, so a four-game week and a two-game week are facts about the club, not the player. Before you start a bench skater over a star, check the schedule planner; before you trust a line, check the injury report for who is actually dressing.
