The minute before the first pick

Pick a preset that matches your league or open the settings and set four things: how many teams, which seat is yours, the scoring, and how many rounds the draft runs. The seat is optional, but with it the board grows a "You" column and a count of picks to your next turn, which is the number you will look at most. If you know the draft order, paste the names one per line and every column gets a manager's name instead of a number, so you can see who took the goalie run past you. Press Start tracking and the lobby becomes the board.

The draft board

Each player you mark fills the next cell, so the board reads back as the order players came off. Press an empty cell and the search asks who went there; press a filled one and you can take that pick back. The board opens on the rounds that have happened plus the one on the clock; Show all rounds opens the rest. Open the draft console puts the same board in its own window for a second screen, and both windows stay in step without anything leaving the browser. Save this draft is the one thing here that needs an account: it files the finished board and its grade beside your mock drafts, and a signed-out press keeps the board in your browser until you come back.

Why the tier lines matter more than the ranks

Tap a position chip and tier lines appear. A tier is a group of players our projections cannot separate by more than the forecasters themselves disagree, so inside a tier the choice is yours: the club with four games this week, the power-play unit you like, the goalie whose backup is hurt. The line between tiers is the part that is real. When one player is left in a tier and the pick is yours, that is the moment worth spending on, because the next name is a genuine step down and will still be one when the pick comes back to you.

Counting goalies while the room panics

The roster strip under the board is where the goalie decision gets made. A twelve-team league that starts two goalies has twenty-four goalie seats to fill, and there are not twenty-four goalies who start most nights. When the first three go inside a round, look at your own strip: an empty G seat with eleven picks until your turn is a different problem from an empty G seat with two. The G chip shows the goalie tiers on their own, so you can see whether what is left is a starter, a tandem, or a backup, and decide whether to reach now or take the best skater and pair a mid-tier goalie with a third one later. Where the league requires two goalie starts a week, which is Yahoo's default, the plan has to produce starts, not names, so a tandem goalie is half a seat.

The last rounds are about the calendar

By round twelve the players inside a tier are close enough that projections stop deciding, and what decides is who plays. The bench on a standard roster is four seats, plus two injured-reserve seats that only hold players your platform has flagged, so a bench holding one long-term injury is a bench of three. Fill the last seats with players whose clubs play often and on the nights the rest of the league sits idle, because a fourth game in a week is a whole extra starter, and the schedule planner shows which clubs those are before the draft starts.

What it does not know

It does not know your league mates, your keeper list or the manager who always takes three goalies. Draft position is the average of other people's drafts, and yours is not the average one. It also does not connect to your platform: no sync, no login, nothing of yours stored on our side unless you choose to save, which means you tap the picks in yourself, and a missed tap is a wrong board until you fix it.
