How football squares work
A squares pool is a 10×10 grid — 100 squares — where each column and row gets a random digit from 0 to 9 after all squares are claimed. Each square's owner wins if the last digit of each team's score matches their column and row digits at the end of a quarter. Example: if the score at halftime is 17–14, the square at column 7, row 4 wins the halftime payout.
Why numbers are drawn after squares are assigned
Some digits (0, 3, 7) are far more valuable than others (2, 5, 9) because of how football scoring works. Drawing the numbers randomly after everyone has picked their squares keeps the pool fair — nobody can buy the good numbers. This generator always assigns names first, then draws digits.

Common payout structures
The most common split is 15% / 25% / 15% / 45% across the four quarters, weighting the final score heaviest. Some pools pay equal 25% per quarter, and some add a "reverse" payout (score digits swapped). Whatever you choose, publish the split before selling squares — it's the #1 source of pool arguments.
Why 0, 3 and 7 win so often
Football scores move in lumps of 3, 6, 7 and 8, so the last digits of real scores cluster hard. A team that kicks two field goals and adds a touchdown sits on 13; another touchdown makes 20. Digits like 2, 5 and 9 need unusual paths to show up early, a safety here, a missed extra point there, which is why the square holding 0 and 7 feels charmed and the 5–2 square feels cursed. The spread evens out somewhat in the fourth quarter, once enough possessions have piled up, and that is part of why so many pools weight the final payout heaviest: it gives the awkward digits a realistic chance to cash before the night ends.
Smaller boards for smaller groups
A full board needs 100 claims, which suits an office more than a living room. Two common variants shrink it. A 50-square board keeps one digit per column but assigns each row a pair of digits, and a 25-square board gives every row and every column two digits each, so ten people can cover the whole grid with a few squares apiece. The math is identical; each square simply wins on more score combinations. Decide the board size before anyone claims a square, because switching afterward reshuffles everyone's chances.
Settle the edge cases before kickoff
Most squares arguments trace back to rules nobody wrote down. Decide three things and publish them with the grid. First, whether the final payout uses the score at the end of the fourth quarter or the score after overtime. Second, what happens to unclaimed squares: roll their share into the final prize, hand them to the organizer, or leave those wins unpaid. Third, whether you pay a reverse, meaning the same digits swapped between the two teams. None of these choices is more correct than another. Written down before the digits are drawn, all of them are fine; announced after a quarter ends, any of them looks like favoritism.
