How a rookie pick gets priced
A rookie pick has no stat line, no age and no injury history. What it has is a range of outcomes, and a market that has already decided what that range is worth. The values on this page come from the same dynasty trade market that prices players, which is the only reason a pick and a player can sit on the same scale at all. When somebody trades the 1.04 for a 24-year-old receiver, that trade is a price, and enough of those prices make a curve.
That is also the honest limit of the tool. It tells you what a pick has been trading for. It does not tell you whether this particular rookie class is strong, whether the player at 1.04 will be any good, or whether your league mate values picks the way the wider market does. Those are the three things that decide whether a trade is smart, and none of them are arithmetic.

Why the curve falls so fast
Look at the first-round bars and the shape is not a gentle slope, it is a cliff followed by a long flat run. The 1.01 is usually worth roughly a third more than the 1.02 and roughly double the 1.06, and by the back of the first round the gap between neighbouring picks is small enough to be noise. That shape is not a quirk of one market. It is what happens when one clear name sits at the top of a class and the next eight are separated by preference rather than by consensus.
Two practical rules follow from it. First, trading up inside the back half of a round costs far more than it gains, because you are paying a premium for a difference the market itself cannot see. Second, if you hold the 1.01 you are holding something genuinely scarce, and the correct return for it is usually more than the two picks somebody offers you for it, which is exactly the comparison this page exists to settle.
What early, mid and late mean here
A pick in a draft that has not happened yet has no slot, because nobody knows the order. The market prices those as thirds of a round instead: an early first, a mid first, a late first. This page follows the same convention, and where the individual slots are known it computes the third as the plain average of the slots inside it. An early first in a 12-team league is the average of picks 1.01 through 1.04, a mid first is 1.05 through 1.08, and a late first is 1.09 through 1.12. That is a real number computed from real slots, not a label. Once a draft has been run the market stops pricing that year's slots and prices only the thirds of the next one, so the calculator reads twelve slot prices back out of them: the four slots inside each third step evenly around the third's published value, so 1.01 through 1.04 still average to the early first the market actually quoted, and the curve note says when the bars were read from thirds rather than published as slots.
If you are trading a future pick, the honest way to describe it is by third, not by slot. Nobody knows whether next year's pick from the team that just lost its starting quarterback is a 1.02 or a 1.07. Pricing it as an early first when it might be a mid first is how people talk themselves into trades they would not otherwise make.
Future picks trade at a discount
A 2027 first is worth less than a 2026 first of the same expected slot, and a 2028 first less again. Part of that is ordinary impatience, part of it is genuine uncertainty about a class nobody has scouted yet, and part of it is that a rebuilding roster two years out may not be rebuilding by then. The market applies that discount by itself and this page reads it back rather than modelling it, which is why a future pick and a current pick of the same round can show quite different numbers.
Reading the verdict
The verdict names a side only when the gap between the two totals is at least five percent of the larger side. Below that it says the sides are about even, and it means it. A trade market assembled from real trades is not precise enough to call a three percent edge a win, and a tool that does so stops being a way of ending arguments and becomes a way of winning them.
Underneath the verdict the page also describes a single pick in the language people trade in, for example that a pick is worth about a late first plus a second. That sentence is built from the same curve as everything else: it finds the one or two picks whose combined value comes closest to the number, and it hedges rather than rounding when nothing on the board is close.
What this cannot tell you
It knows nothing about your roster, your contention window or your league's scoring beyond the one-quarterback, 12-team shape the pick values are published for. It cannot see a rookie class that everyone in your league has already decided is weak, and it has no opinion on whether you should be buying picks at all. Consolidating three picks into one costs you roster spots and draft-day flexibility, and gaining them costs you the players you traded away. Use the number to check whether an offer is roughly fair, then decide with the part of the decision the number cannot reach.
